So many of you inquired about the criteria for being placed in next year's AP Langauge and Composition course (along with asking that I reconsider my selections) that I want to offer one clarifying comment here. For starters, there is no one criterion that either gets you in or eliminates you from consideration. I do not take recommendations lightly, as it is my job to find a class that is best suited to each of you, to say nothing of another teacher having to live with my decisions. That said, I look at your overall performance in my class with a focus on your writing ability and your presence as a contributor to our collective discourse. I also look at your PSAT scores. Rememeber, the class many of you are looking to join focuses on the use of language. So those of you with a better grasp for the nuance of written and spoken English were recommended for the class. There is always a point at which a line must be drawn. I will conference with Ms. McClintick, and should a spot in the class open up I will contact you individually. Please try to understand, however, that no matter how much you want to challenge yourself, it is simply not realistic for everyone to be recommended for the AP class. If you would like to speak with me personally about the recommendation, you know where to find me.
